Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Recipe

As the 20th President of the United States, James Abram Garfield said: “Man cannot live by bread alone; he must have peanut butter” This unexpectedly simple product with an unusual taste has won the heart of every first American who is ready to eat peanut butter several times a day, just spreading it on bread or adding it to their favorite dishes.

The modern analog of peanut butter appeared thanks to the perseverance of one Canadian and three Americans. In 1884, Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal patented the production of delicate peanut butter between two heated surfaces. Then in 1895, John Harvey Kellogg (the creator of cornflakes) received a patent for the production of peanut butter from unroasted peanuts as a source of protein for people left without teeth. In 1903, Dr. Ambrose Strobe from Missouri patented a special device for making peanut butter. Almost 20 years later, in 1922, chemist Joseph Rosenfield invented a method for making delicate peanut butter with the addition of hydrogenated oil. And in 1928 he sold his license to Peter Pan Peanut Butter Company, which in 1932 began mass production of peanut butter.

Ingredients

You don’t need a lot of ingredients for the simplest and most beloved sandwich with peanut butter and jelly or pb&j. It is believed that the first recipe was first published in 1901 and has been incredibly popular ever since.

Steps

To make your best peanut butter and jam sandwich you need to follow these easy steps:

Collect your ingredients

Peanut butter is not only a delicious and nutritious product but also very useful. It contains vitamins and minerals such as B1, B2, A, E, PP and folic acid, as well as iodine, iron, potassium, calcium, cobalt, magnesium, resveratrol, phosphorus and zinc.

It has a fairly high nutritional value: 590 kcal per 100 grams, so nutritionists agree that the optimal “dosage” for those who adhere to the principles of proper nutrition is one tablespoon butter (approximately 30 g).

Despite all the obvious advantages of peanut butter, you need to remember that not every product is equally useful. It is necessary to choose butter based on several criteria, and you will get a truly high-quality and natural delicacy.

Natural peanut butter should contain peanuts, salt and nothing more. The fewer ingredients in the peanut butter, the better it is. You should pay attention to the presence of flavor enhancers and sweeteners — they should not be in the natural product.

Pay attention to the presence of hydrogenated oil. It includes palm, rapeseed and cottonseed oils. If you want a healthier product, we recommend avoiding these ingredients.

The jelly that was used in the original recipe was grape jelly, but you can use one to your taste. Strawberry jelly or raspberry jelly will also work well.

We suggest using whole wheat or white bread for your pb&j sandwich. Other types of bread like sourdough or rye would overwhelm the flavor.

Spread peanut butter

When we have sorted out the ingredients, it’s time to start preparing pb&j. As for the amount of peanut butter, it all depends on your preferences. However, if you are going to take a sandwich with you to work or college, we advise you to spread a smaller amount of peanut butter since, by the time you get there, peanut butter will be everywhere.

In order to facilitate the process of spreading peanut butter, we advise you to stir it first. You can also put peanut butter in the microwave for 20 seconds (don’t forget to put it in a bowl or plate). Putting it in the microwave makes it soft and pliable.

If you use butter, we advise you to spread butter on bread first and then spread peanut butter on top of it.

Spread jelly or jam

Now spread jelly or jam on another piece of bread. This can be done with a knife or spoon. If you are going to take pb&j with you, we advise you to spread it in a small amount.

Also, you can prepare a jam by yourself. It will not take long and is quite simple to make. You need to:

  • Take 16 fl oz of red grape juice and 7 oz of sugar and let them simmer for 30 min.
  • Mix 2 more tablespoons of sugar with 1 tablespoon of apple pectin, powder your jam evenly and then mix with whisk for 3 minutes.
  • Let the jam cool. Ready!

Press the two slices of bread together

Gently connect the halves and press them a little. If you have a lot of spread on the halves in order not to mess everything around we suggest connecting halves quickly.

Cut the sandwich

You can cut the sandwich diagonally to get the triangle pieces. Or cut it across to get rectangular pieces. Also, you can leave it as it is or cut off the sandwich crusts.

Enjoy your sandwich

Getting Creative

Adding some interesting toppings to your sandwich won’t hurt. Here you can be very creative and add ingredients that you like.

Add crunch

To make your sandwich more nutritious you can add nuts, granola or crackers.

Add more sweetness

You can add almost any sweet and healthy ingredient to a peanut butter sandwich. For example, it can be: jam, syrups, berries, honey, dried or fresh fruits. A variety of supplements allow you to create a new breakfast almost every day.

Toast your bread

Toast bread in a toaster or in a dry frying pan. This will make your sandwich crunchier and will let you spread your peanut butter easier.

Use french toast

The amount of ingredients is calculated for three servings. You can use absolutely any bread, depending on your preferences.

Ingredients

  • Bread – 6 slices
  • Egg – 3 pcs
  • Salt is on the tip of the knife
  • Sugar (optional) – 1 teaspoon
  • Milk – 2 tablespoons per 1 egg
  • Butter or vegetable oil – 3 tablespoons

A very important point is that topping is added only after toasts are ready!

In order to make french toasts, follow these easy steps.

We will need a deep bowl for beating eggs, a whisk or a regular fork, a spatula and a large flat serving plate.

  • Put the frying pan to heat. It is better to choose a pan for frying with a thick bottom.
  • Break the eggs in a separate bowl, add salt (and/or sugar) and beat well with a whisk. There is no need to use a mixer for these purposes unless you are cooking for 10 people.
  • Add the milk and whisk again. If there is no milk in the house, you can add water.
  • Slices of bread are well dipped in the egg mixture on both sides so that they are soaked. It is important to find a middle ground here – so that the toasts do not stay dry and at the same time do not get soggy.
  • Put the bread slices on a hot frying pan. The oil should be warmed up well.
  • Fry the bread on both sides until golden brown and spread on a plate.
  • Add pb&j while toasts are still hot.

Use banana bread
